Grade C vs Grade AB: what actually differs on a used iPhone

Buyers new to bulk used iPhones assume a lower grade means a worse working phone. It does not. On the Hong Kong wholesale market, grade describes the body only. Function is a separate question, and it is answered by testing, not by grade.

What the two grades mean

CBack glass cracked or heavily scuffedIntact, no cracks100% testedVolume resellers, market stalls

The rule we work to: a cracked back never means a cracked screen, and never means a broken function. If a unit fails any of the twelve checks, it does not ship — regardless of grade.

Why Grade C is not "cheap junk"

Grade C is the highest-volume category in Southeast Asia because the defect is cosmetic and repairable in the destination country. A reseller buys Grade C, swaps or skins the back, and sells it as a clean unit. The margin comes from the price gap between C and AB, not from the phone being worse.

What matters for buyers is that the screen is original and intact, the battery health is recorded, and Face ID works. Those three decide resale value far more than a cracked back panel.

How to check a grade claim in one minute

Ask the supplier for: (1) a photo of the back, straight on, under even light; (2) a photo of the screen showing a white background with brightness at maximum; (3) the battery health reading on screen. A supplier who cannot produce these three pictures on request is not grading at all — they are guessing.

The price gap

Between Grade C and Grade AB on the same model and capacity, the gap is typically 8–15% depending on the series. Grade C moves faster; Grade AB holds more margin per unit. Most of our buyers order both and split them across two customer segments.
