Why China-version iPhones sell better in Southeast Asia
Buyers new to the market ask for "international version" because it sounds safer. In Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, experienced resellers often ask for the opposite. Here is the difference in practice.
The three things that actually matter
| Feature | China version | US / EU version |
|---|---|---|
| SIM tray | Dual physical SIM | Usually one physical + eSIM |
| Camera shutter sound | Can be silenced | Fixed in some regions |
| Regional pop-up | None | Possible on some models |
Dual physical SIM is the deciding factor in most of Southeast Asia. Prepaid data is normal, people carry two SIMs, and eSIM support on local carriers is uneven. A phone that takes two physical cards sells; one that needs an eSIM for the second line sits on the shelf.
What "China version" does not mean
It does not mean locked, refurbished, or inferior. It means the unit was configured for the mainland market. Hardware is the same generation, the same chip, the same cameras. What changes is the SIM configuration, some regional software behaviour, and which LTE bands are prioritised — check the bands your carrier uses before a large order.
FaceTime and other software differences
Some China-version units ship without certain calling features depending on the model and iOS version. For a wholesale buyer this rarely matters — the resale buyer cares about SIM, camera, battery and price. Confirm with your own sample if a specific feature is critical to your customers.
How to check what you are buying
Ask the supplier for the model number shown in Settings → General → About. China-version units end in a different suffix than US or EU units. A supplier who cannot show this on request is not sure what they are shipping.
